Situation at Teknaf border could deteriorate into a conflict next month

There is growing concern over the potential escalation of conflict conditions next month in the Myanmar region bordering Teknaf, which could lead to increased attempts of Rohingya and Border Guard Police (BGP) of Myanmar to infiltrate Bangladesh. This concern was highlighted in a report presented at a meeting of the parliamentary committee related to the Ministry of Home Affairs held at the Parliament building on Sunday, April 28.

The report, which did not specify the reasons behind the anticipated worsening of the war-like situation, suggested that due to these developments, there could be an increase in efforts by the Rohingya and BGP members to enter Bangladesh. The report also addressed the risks faced by Bangladesh due to the situation along the Bangladesh-Myanmar border.

Key risks outlined include managing the illegal influx of Myanmar nationals (Rohingya/Mog), ensuring security along the unprotected land and maritime borders between Bangladesh and Myanmar, preventing illegal trafficking of rations meant for Rohingyas, and the potential increase in drug trafficking and smuggling activities due to the bartering of rations for drugs. Additionally, the report cautioned that the easy availability of firearms in a conflict situation might enable terrorist groups to acquire and use these weapons within Bangladesh. It also noted potential provocations in Bangladesh's hill regions by the Arakan Army due to its affiliations with local ethnic minorities and the Mog community.

The meeting, chaired by Benazir Ahmed, was attended by members of the committee including the Minister of Home Affairs Asaduzzaman Khan, along with other prominent members such as Samsul Haque Dudu, Dr. Samil Uddin Ahmed Shimul, Moyez Uddin Sharif, Md. Shanawar Hossain, Chayan Islam, Md. Saddam Hossain (Pavel), and Hasina Bari Chowdhury.
