Lack of democracy cause of environmental disaster

In Bangladesh, the populace is grappling with severe hardships due to intensifying heatwaves, with temperatures escalating each season to unbearable levels, especially for those in the workforce. Scientists have warned for decades about the dire consequences of climate change, and now, the populace is experiencing the harsh realities of these predictions. The unchecked consumerism and capitalism of the Western world, combined with rampant greed and the absence of democracy in countries like ours, are progressively rendering the Earth increasingly uninhabitable.

Although populations in the third world contribute the least to these issues, they suffer the most, particularly in countries that lack democratic governance. Over the past 15 years, Bangladesh has seen a destructive onslaught of activities under the guise of development. Economists acknowledge that structural development is crucial for the economic advancement of the impoverished in the third world, even if it comes at the expense of the environment. This necessitates that Western nations make concessions, reaching agreements with these countries on issues such as carbon emissions.

Fundamentally, structural development is critical for countries like Bangladesh, even if it risks environmental degradation. However, the core problem is that these developments, although executed, have failed to improve the living standards of the poor, who were the primary intended beneficiaries. Most projects have been implemented without public consultation, serving primarily as vehicles for corruption.

To summarize, the past fifteen years in Bangladesh have been characterized by rampant corruption and numerous unnecessary development projects. While these projects have benefitted the ruling class, they have brought dual curses for the populace: severe environmental disasters and enormous debts.

Since there is no electoral accountability, the ruling class continues these actions unabated. Lakes are being encroached upon, forests are being cleared, and urban beautification projects that disregard environmental concerns are being implemented without public interest. Parks and open spaces are being commercialized, all for the financial benefit of those in power, who funnel these funds to offshore accounts, including in developed countries, planning their escape should the country collapse.

Furthermore, not only are we suffering from extreme heat, but the country's economy is also under tremendous stress. Earning a livelihood is becoming increasingly difficult for the working poor. People in coastal areas, including Barisal, are being forced to abandon their homes due to environmental catastrophes.

The dire situation created by the absence of democracy and accountability is difficult to rectify. The only solution is the prompt establishment of a democratic government and system that is accountable to its people. Only then can we begin to mitigate this vast disaster.
